Dr. Ali’s professional journey began after being accepted to an early assurance medical degree program at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He then went on to Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, receiving a Doctor of Medicine degree while completing a Research Fellowship under the tutelage of George L. Spaeth, M.D., at Wills Eye Hospital.

Dr. Ali’s post-doctoral training included an internship in Internal Medicine at Lankenau Medical Center in Philadelphia, and a residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary). During his residency, Dr. Ali was selected as Chief Resident in Ophthalmology and was honored with the Excellence in Teaching Award for Outstanding Mentoring. Dr. Ali completed a prestigious fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at Duke University, where he also served as Clinical Associate in Ophthalmology. While at Duke, he received the VitreoRetinal Surgery Foundation Research Award, Vit-Buckle Society Scholarship, and was selected as a Heed Fellow – regarded as amongst the most prestigious national merit awards in ophthalmology.

Dr. Ali has published over 20 articles about ophthalmic research and care in leading peer-reviewed journals, including JAMA Ophthalmology, Cornea, and Journal of Glaucoma. He has also given over 25 presentations at leading scientific meetings. Dr. Ali has also authored numerous chapters in ophthalmology textbooks on subjects ranging from vitreoretinal surgery, ocular infectious diseases, pediatric retinal disease, retinal vein occlusion, and glaucoma. He has served as section co-editor for the journal Retina.

Dr. Ali is board-certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, and International Society of Spaeth Fellows.

Dr. Ali enjoys travel, basketball, teaching, hiking, and spending time with his wife and two sons.
