Dr. Berinstein received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Syracuse University and his Doctor of Medicine degree from New York Medical College.  He completed his Ophthalmology residency at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he served as Chief Resident, followed by a fellowship in adult and pediatric Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at William Beaumont Hospital/Associated Retinal Consultants in Royal Oak, Michigan.  Following his training, he joined the faculty at Yale University School of Medicine where he served as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Medical Studies.  Dr. Berinstein joined the Retina Group of Washington in 2001 and currently serves as a Regional Medical Director and was first Chair of the PRISM Formulary Committee.

Dr. Berinstein is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is licensed in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. He is Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Georgetown University School of Medicine, and is affiliated with the Washington Hospital Center, and Inova Fairfax & Fair Oaks Hospitals.  He is a member of more than a dozen professional societies and has served as President for both the Washington DC Metropolitan Ophthalmological Society and Northern Virginia Academy of Ophthalmology.  Dr. Berinstein presently serves as a Board Member for the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC).

Dr. Berinstein has authored over 100 papers & abstracts and has served as the Principal Investigator at RGW for 12 major clinical trials. He has spoken at local and national meetings and has been a Grand Rounds guest speaker at ophthalmology and medical training programs throughout the country. He is the former editor of Retina Digest, and served as a reviewer for Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and Retina.  Dr. Berinstein has been recognized and honored by the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the Prevention of Blindness, and was the 2025 recipient of the One PRISM Award.  He has also been named “Top Doctor” in Washingtonian Magazine, Northern Virginia Magazine, and Best Doctors in America.

Dr. Daniel M. Berinstein Becomes Committee Member of OMIC Group Providing Medical Liability Insurance Products and Services

Dr. Daniel M. Berinstein was appointed to be a committee member of the Ophthalmic Mutual lnsurance Company (OMIC), a group whose mission is to provide ophthalmologists with the highest quality medical liability insurance products and services. He will serve on the Underwriting, Risk Management and ROP Task Force Committees of the OMIC, founded in 1987 to support members of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Doctors Levinson, Berinstein, and Garfinkel Present At the Annual Meeting of the Retina Society

Dr. Joshua Levinson, Dr. Daniel Berinstein & Dr. Richard Garfinkel of The Retina Group of Washington presented on “Improving the Safety of Intravitreal Injections” at the annual meeting of the Retina Society in Boston, MA. Intravitreal injections are frequently used to treat vision loss from diabetic macular edema and exudative (“wet”) macular degeneration. The RGW team analyzed the group’s collective experience with over 35,000 injections performed in 2016 and identified strategies to improve the safety of intravitreal injections. As a result of the study, these techniques have been adopted by academic centers and private practices across the country.

Dr. Daniel M. Berinstein, William F. Deegan III and Michael M. Lai were selected by their peers as “Top Doctors” in the highly-regarded Washingtonian list.
